Our Mission

The Heartstringz Foundation is dedicated to lifting the spirits of hospitalized kids and senior citizens with the simple four-stringed instrument. We provide musical companionship, ukuleles, and lessons taught by a team of enthusiastic volunteers. We accomplish this mission in partnership with local hospitals, healthcare professionals, and existing programs.  We acquire ukuleles through donations and our corporate sponsors, many of whom are musical instrument manufacturers. Together we help fill our clients’ days with joyous music.

Through our satellite program, we will ship ukuleles and instructional packets anywhere in the USA, so if you know a special someone who would benefit from our services, please send us a message and we will send out a ukulele right away.  We also offer virtual lessons.

Why the Ukulele?

The ukulele was introduced to Hawai’i in the 19th century when Portuguese settlers arrived in Honolulu. Legend has it that locals were so moved and enthralled by the instrument that they nicknamed it the “jumping flea,” because of the quick motion at which it was played. Another meaning comes from Queen Lili’uokalani who explained that “ukulele” means “the gift that came here.” The rise in popularity of the ukulele can be attributed to the royal family. We believe that this instrument is a true gift that we are dedicated to giving to those who need it most.

The ukulele is fun to hold and small enough to take just about anywhere. It is one of the easiest instruments to learn and play - it’s not intimidating and a great way to begin one’s musical journey. Because of its gentle learning curve, playing the ukulele is self-rewarding and self-perpetuating. You just can't put it down once you start…plus they're really cute!

There’s something about the ukulele that just makes you smile. It makes you let your guard down. It brings out the child in all of us.
